Themes
FISC was formed in 2020 after UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) committed £66m to help the foundation industries take important steps towards a more sustainable, productive, and secure future.
It will lead projects exploring and delivering effective decarbonisation solutions to the problems they face across six key themes.
Alternative fuels
Supporting the foundation industries in the adoption of lower carbon and less polluting fuels such as hydrogen and biofuels.
Circular economy
Making sure that the UK uses its foundation industry resources as effectively and efficiently as possible to increase security of supply and reduce environmental impact.
Digital Sensing
To improve the quality of data available from processes and from supply chains so that materials can be made more efficiently, so that materials can be tracked as they move through supply chains and so they can be recovered, reused, or recycled more effectively.
Process Optimisation
To work closely with industry to develop sensing and measuring approaches that improve the efficiency of exiting processes and help develop new processes. Data gathered will be analysed to help improve operations, but also to identify best practice across the foundation industries and transfer knowledge that aids the competitiveness of the UK.
Sustainable Materials
To combine skills across the innovation network to transfer research ideas through to manufacturing and also to combine resources to develop supply chain for the next generation of sustainable foundation industry products.
Training and Skills
To work together to identify best practice for the training and development of people across the foundation industries helping address the skills gaps and to make these vital industries attractive places to work for everyone.
Let’s innovate together!
